In early April 2019, the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB, Settle WA) hosted its 18th annual symposium. This year's theme focused on translational biology, which is the practice of commercializing research discovery. Over the two-day symposium, the audience was informed about the latest in the research and development of new products for fighting cancer with immunotherapy and combating research to ... Read more
As previously discussed , immunoprofiling is the quantitative measurement of antigen receptors (ARs; antibodies or T-cell receptors) in a sample. Massively parallel (NextGen) DNA sequencing is a commonly used method for this purpose because receptor diversity can be quickly and cost-effectively measured with the added benefit that individual receptors can be quantified.

Biotechnology is the field of study that involves the practical use of biological processes in industrial production. The early applications of biotechnology gave rise to the making of beer, wine, and cheese. With advances in technology, vaccine development and insulin production were made possible through biotechnology. Advances in computing technology are transforming biotechnology in new ways. Immunoprofiling, the quantitative measurement of antigen receptors (ARs; antibodies or T-cell receptors) in a sample, is a hot topic in biotechnology. In basic research, immunoprofiling is used to assess the diversity of antigen receptors (ARs: antibodies and T-Cell receptors) and how this diversity changes in ... Read more
One of the themes of the recent @synbiobeta #sbbsf17 annual meeting (Oct 4,5 2017) was the impact of synthetic biology on making new things or making old things in new ways. From cement to food, synthetic biology is causing people to rethink the way things are made. One of the most interesting ideas is the notion of using synthetic biology ... Read more
The requirements of "good communication skills" and "comfortable working in a multidisciplinary setting" on a biotech job listing are common, but what do these mean in practice? For work in biotech, there's often more than meets the eye in a job posting.
Biotechnology is an inherently multidisciplinary field, now more so than ever. A single lab can employ personnel ... Read more
The biotech industry is booming. Some reservations notwithstanding, influxes of venture capital reflect economic robustness in the biotech market, and the recent pledge of funds for personalized (or "precision") medical research by the Obama administration reflect widespread public interest in the industry.
Amidst this upswing, many are still hesitant to call Seattle a biotech hub. This is for several ... Read more
