Education & Training:
Most employers prefer applicants to have a four-year degree and one to two years of experience. This is changing. Two-year educational programs that target the necessary knowledge, and laboratory skills may provide the appropriate preparation.

Microbiology Quality Control Technicians are responsible for assuring product quality through all day-to-day operations. They assist the biomanufacturing team by evaluating raw materials, other supplies, and the finished, packaged product. They ensure compliance to common Good Manufacturing Practices. They calibrate and maintain microbiology laboratory equipment; compile and analyze data for documentation; and prepare reports. They revise and update SOPs as necessary.
Different methods for achieving microbiological control are used in during different phases of manufacturing. Since QC is involved at every stage, Microbiology Quality Control Technicians may work in numerous locations. At a small company, they can be versatile. People in these positions need to be detail oriented, willing and able to keep excellent records, and have good communication skills. Those with good laboratory skills and manufacturing or laboratory experience are more likely to get the best jobs and the best salaries. Some QC technicians work standard 40-hour work weeks while for others, especially in large companies that are actively manufacturing products, shift work is common.
